BATHURST HIGH SCHOOL’S PROFILE 2006-2007

MISSION STATEMENT

Education at BHS is to be an innovative, dynamic, contemporary learning experience for the development of a positive, thinking young adult with the necessary social, physical, emotional and intellectual skills to engage in our diverse and changing society

BATHURST HIGH SCHOOL PROFILE 2006-2007

This year we have a population of about 750 students with a teaching staff of 44. Within that staff are 3 administrators, 2 guidance counsellors and 1.8 Methods and Resource teachers. We have 10 teacher assistants, 1 library assistant, 1.5 secretaries, 1 data clerk, 11 custodians and 5 cafeteria workers.  We have access to the services of a school psychologist, a behavior intervention worker, a social worker, a drug addiction counsellor, and a computer technician. We are also affiliated with the District Alternate Learning Center which is staffed by two additional teachers, housing approximately 20 of our students.

Bathurst High School offers a wide variety of extra and cocurricular activities.  Every activity has at least one teacher coach or advisor. We do have community volunteers to help out with our programs and their assistance is invaluable. Last year Bathurst High School had over 50 teams and clubs, from varsity and junior varsity sports to such things as Band, Drama, Teens Against Drunk Driving and Radio Club. In addition we offered over 100 cocurricular activities, examples of which were the University and College Open House, Scholarship information sessions, Provincial and National Math Competitions, Provincial and National Leadership Conferences, and a Chinese student exchange to mention but a few. For more information on what is going on at Bathurst High School, check out our Web Page at http://bathursthigh.nbed.nb.ca.

Bathurst High School operates under all Provincial and District policies and guidelines. The Student Handbooks provide a comprehensive package of our expectations with regard to student behavior while at school. For most infractions students will be spoken to and consequences will become progressively more significant for repeated misbehavior.

One of the major premises on which the Positive Learning Environment Policy is based is the belief that pupils and adults in the public school system have the right to work and learn in a safe, orderly, productive, respectful and harassment-free environment. As administrators and teachers it is our responsibility to build and maintain a positive learning environment within our school. In so doing, sometimes tough decisions have to be made.  In the case of suspensions of over five days, the parent/ guardian or mature student has the right to an Appeal Process.

With that said, I want you to know that incidences of serious misconduct are rare at Bathurst High School. There is a very positive climate that is almost tangible as you walk through the hallways. Teachers and students have a good rapport. I have heard many positive comments from visitors to our building. They sense the cooperation between teachers and students, teachers and teachers and students and students. Bathurst High School is a good place to learn and work and it affords many opportunities for growth as an individuals and as part of a team.
